Same-Sex Marriage in the Methodist Church

A statement on behalf of Thackley Methodist Church Council following its meeting on 28th March 2022.

Following the Methodist Conference decision last year to allow same-sex marriages on Methodist premises, individual churches are deciding whether or not to register their buildings.

The Church Council considered the matter carefully and prayerfully, and agreed the following:
  1. To register the church building for same-sex marriage ceremonies.
  2. To consent to services of blessing for same-sex couples who are already married to take place in the church building.
  3. To nominate Rev Nick Blundell as the Authorised Person to be appointed by the Registrar to be present at the solemnization of same-sex marriages conducted in the church building.
The vote was unanimous for each of the three resolutions.

The Council recognised that some church members may not agree with our decision, and agreed that the Ministers and Council members would be available to discuss the decision.

The Council was keen to stress that all members and friends are loved and valued, even when we disagree. We are, and must remain, a loving fellowship.

Nick Blundell, Link Minister, Thackley Methodist Church.
